Multiplying fractions
If you are multiplying fractions it is a straight multiplication:
1⁄2 * 3⁄4
numerator * numerator 1 * 3 = 3
denominator * denominator 2 * 4 = 8
and the result of this multiplication is 1⁄2 * 3⁄4 = 3⁄8
Dividing with fractions.
Dividing a fraction with a fraction works differently than multiplying with fractions.
There are two ways you can approach this. Option one is the way you are suppose to do it.
Option 2 is explained below the calculator.
Option 1
1⁄2 ÷ 3⁄4
This involves 2 steps.
Step 1: change the division to a multiplication
1⁄2 * 3⁄4
Step 2: flip the numerator with the denominator of the second fraction.
1⁄2 * 4⁄3
numerator * numerator 1 * 4 = 4
denominator * denominator 2 * 3 = 6
and the result of this calculation is
1⁄2 ÷ 3⁄4 = 1⁄2 * 4⁄3 = 4⁄6 = 2⁄3
Dividing with mixed numbers
The easiest way to do this is is by adding the number values to the fraction
2 1⁄2 ÷ 4 3⁄8 then becomes 5⁄2 ÷ 35⁄8
change it into a multiplication and flip the second fraction
5⁄2 * 8⁄35 =
numerator * numerator 5 * 8= 40
denominator * denominator 2 * 35 = 70
5⁄2 * 8⁄35 = 40⁄70 which becomes 4⁄7
