# Area Tiling Layout

If you are concerned with aesthetics of your tiling you will want the edge tile to be the same on both ends for the area width and for the area length when tiling a floor. For tiling a tub wall you want the edge tiles for the width of the back wall to be of equal size.

If you know the exact size of your edge tiles you will be able to start laying the tile from one end of the area you are tiling. If you don't know the edge sizes you will have to start tiling with the first tile exactly in the centre of the area.

Tiles will expand, if ever so slight, and if placed against a solid it won't take much for a grout line or tile to crack. Better to be safe and add an expansion gap around the perimeter of the area.

If the edge tile becomes to small or large, look at adjusting the size of the grout line or the expansion gap. If nothing works, using a different size or different tile all together for the edging to make it look good .

Rows of Full Tiles layed Lengthwise # Leftover space Lengthwise in Edge Tile Size for Length Direction in Rows of Full Tiles layed Widthwise # Leftover space Widthwise in Edge Tile Size for the Width Direction in

#### The Calculation

1. enter the length of your area
2. enter the width of the area
3. enter tile length (the tile length measurement is associated with "length of the area")
4. enter the tile width (the tile width measurement is associated with "width of the area")
5. enter the size of your spacers( the grout line)
6. enter the size of your expansion gap

#### Results

1. rows of full tiles in the length direction
2. the length of the last tile for the length direction
3. size of the edge tile for both ends of the length direction (result 2 split in half)
4. rows of full tiles in the width direction
5. the width of the last tile for the width direction
6. size of the edge tile for both ends of the width direction (result 5 split in half)

### How to enter the amounts:

Length of Area: 12'- 4 1/2"
Width of Area: 8' - 2 3/4"
Length of Tile: 8 3/4" for a square tile both length and width field have to be filled
Width of Tile: 8 3/4"
Tile Spacer Size: 1/2"
Distance of Wall for Expansion: 1/4"
