Hip Roof Wood Shingles

Spike's Calculators

This calculator is designed to help you estimate the total number of wood shingles needed for a hip roof, including considerations for waste, starter strips, and ridge capping. It simplifies calculating roofing materials, ensuring you have the right amount for your project.

Wood Shingles for Hip Roof
Wood Shingles
Note:
The wood shingles calculation is based on:
-Shingles coverage of one roofing square (100 sqft) = 4 bundles @ 5" exposure
-One bundle covers 25 square feet @ 5" exposure.
-It adds one bundle for every 60 lineal feet of perimeter starter course.
-It adds one bundle for every 25 lineal feet of ridge and hips.
-If you are planning to use premade capping for the ridge, subtract the amount for the ridge from the total bundles needed.

Calculator

  1. enter the length of the building in feet and inches
  2. the width of the building in feet and inches
  3. the eave overhang in inches
  4. the roof pitch as a ratio (e.g., 6 for a 6/12 pitch)
  5. the exposure of the shingles in inches (the part of the shingle that is exposed to the weather, typically 5 inches)
  6. a waste percentage to account for cutting and fitting

Results

  1. the total area of the roof in square feet
  2. the length of the ridge in lineal feet
  3. the angle of the roof in degrees, calculated based on the roof pitch
  4. the slope of the roof in a percentage
  5. the number of shingle bundles required to cover the roof area, excluding waste
  6. additional number of shingle bundles needed to cover the waste factor
  7. the number of shingle bundles required for the starter strip
  8. the number of shingle bundles needed for ridge capping
  9. the total number of shingle bundles needed, including waste, starter strips, and ridge capping

This comprehensive tool ensures an accurate estimate of the materials required for your hip roof project, helping you plan and purchase the correct amount of wood shingles, minimizing waste, and ensuring a smooth and efficient roofing process.
