Pavers

Paver Base Calculator

Spike VM

Calculate the amount of material needed for the paver base.

Installing a good base for laying pavers is very important. It is recommended to use a min of 4" base under patios and walk ways and anywhere from 8" to 12" of a base for under driveways. These are depths to use where the sub soil is of good quality with good drainage. For instance if the subsoil consists of heavy clay you should increase the depth of the base for a driveway to as much as 18".

The depth of the excavation is determined by the granular paver base + bedding course + paver thickness.

Over excavate the area where the pavers are to be layed by at least the depth of the excavation on each open side. Obviously you can't over excavate where it attaches to something.

The swell percentage is the increase in volume of the excavated material from bank to loose state. For smaller excavations you can ignore this.

To keep this calculator simple the amount of material needed includes a preset compaction factor based on "Gravel, Average Graduation, Dry" That should cover most of the materials suitable to be used as a base for placing pavers.

Volume of Excavated Material ft³
Base Needed In Cubic Feet ft³
Base Needed In Cubic Yards yd³

The Calculator

  1. enter the length of the area
  2. enter the width of the area
  3. the desired depth of the base (in inches)
  4. bulking/swelling of the excavated material (percentage)

The results

  1. the square footage of the area
  2. the volume of the excavated material
  3. base material needed in cubic feet
  4. base material needed converted to cubic yards
