Fuel and Distance Calculators

Electric Vehicle VS Standard Gas Vehicle Fuel Cost

Spike VM

Compare the cost of fuel between an electric vehicle and a gas-fueled vehicle driving a certain amount of miles.

Example
Your average miles per gallon (MPG) is 24
The price of one gallon of fuel is $3.12
The average fuel efficiency is 33 kWh/100 miles
One kWh of electricity costs $0.226
Trip distance is 120 miles

Divide the trip distance by average MPG for the gas-fueled vehicle;
120 ÷ 24 = 5
It will take 5 gallons of gas to drive 120 miles.

Multiply the cost of one gallon of fuel by 5;
3.12 * 5 = 15.6
It will cost $15.60 on gas to drive 120 miles.

For the EV first, calculate how far you can drive with one kWh;
100 ÷ 33 = 3.03
You can drive a distance of 3.03 miles using one kWh of energy.

Divide the trip distance by 3.03 to get the number of kWh needed to drive 120 miles;
120 ÷ 3.03 = 39.6
It will take 39.6 kWh to drive 120 miles in the EV.

Multiply the cost of one kWh by 39.6;
0.226 * 39.6 = 8.9496
It will cost $8.95 to drive the EV 120 miles.
