Metric Concrete Curb & Gutter Volume Calculator

This calculator determines the cross-sectional area and concrete volume for a curb-and-gutter section when site measurements are in metres (m) and millimetres (mm). Results are provided in cubic metres, cubic feet, and cubic yards, along with running totals for multi-section estimates.

Running Total of Concrete

Reset Form: clears current inputs and results but keeps the totals.
Reset Totals: zeros the cumulative totals.

Calculator

  1. the horizontal run of the curb section in metres
  2. thickness of the curb measured from the face to the back edge in millimetres
  3. vertical height of the curb above the gutter slab in millimetres
  4. the horizontal width of the gutter beyond the curb in millimetres
  5. thickness of the gutter slab (flag thickness) in millimetres

Results

  1. the cross-sectional area of the curb face and slab in square millimetres
  2. the volume of concrete needed in cubic metres
  3. the volume in cubic yards
  4. the volume in cubic feet
  5. Running Totals: cumulative volumes for multiple sections

Curb & Gutter Formulas

Variables (all metric): \(D\) = curb depth (m), \(H\) = curb height (m), \(G\) = gutter width (m), \(T\) = flag thickness (m), \(L\) = length (m).

  • Curb area: \(A_{curb}=D \times H\)
  • Flag width: \(W = D + G\)
  • Flag area: \(A_{flag}=W \times T\)
  • Total area: \(A_{tot}=A_{curb}+A_{flag}\)
  • Volume (ml): \(V_{m^{3}} = A_{tot} \times L\)
  • Volume (ftl): \(V_{ft^{3}} = \dfrac{V_{m^{3}}}{0.0283168466}\)
  • Volume (ydl): \(V_{yd^{3}} = \dfrac{V_{ft^{3}}}{27}\)

Worked Example

Given:
\(L = 10\,\text{m},\; D = 0.15\,\text{m},\; H = 0.30\,\text{m},\;
G = 0.40\,\text{m},\; T = 0.15\,\text{m}\)

  1. \(A_{curb}=0.15 \times 0.30 = 0.045\,\text{m}^2\)
  2. \(W = 0.15 + 0.40 = 0.55\,\text{m}\)
  3. \(A_{flag}=0.55 \times 0.15 = 0.0825\,\text{m}^2\)
  4. \(A_{tot}=0.045 + 0.0825 = 0.1275\,\text{m}^2\)
  5. \(V_{m^{3}} = 0.1275 \times 10 = 1.275\,\text{m}^3\)
  6. \(V_{ft^{3}} = \frac{1.275}{0.0283168466} \approx 45.03\,\text{ft}^3\)
  7. \(V_{yd^{3}} = \frac{45.03}{27} \approx 1.67\,\text{yd}^3\)

When Ordering Concrete

This concrete calculator will help you in estimating the amount of concrete needed for your project. The amount given as needed, does not include any waste. It is recommended, depending on the job you are doing, to add anywhere from an extra 4% to 10% to your concrete order to make sure you have enough concrete to finish the job. Ask when ordering the concrete. They will be able to give you a good idea of what is needed.
